Auntie Erin!

This one deserved it's very own post...I'm now an auntie to a niecey! My brother John and sister-in-law Melissa, and their son Austin, welcomed a new family member this morning. Le joli petit bébé, Addison Rose! Addison tipped the scales at a whopping 4 pounds 15 ounces and is 19 inches long. I am psyched to have a niece, because I so enjoyed being one to my many amazing aunties! I am chomping at the bit to get a bigger photo than the one my brother texted me this morning, and when I do, I'll edit this post to include it. Pink and bows and flowers and nieces, yippee! *clicks heels while jigging*

See the rules? My Dad was being antinomian, as it does not specify grandparents!

Proof! What a Grandpa!

We are Family!

When Ben and I got married, one of my friends DJ-ed our wedding for us. It was a blast, and one of the songs he played was, *We are Family*. I'll never forget dancing to it with my new brother-in-law Peter. We are so fortunate that we are family, and I love that my children are realizing those blessings too! Here are some pictures from their recent visit. Unfortunately many of the Adelynne pictures I have came out blurry--uugh!

One of those Nights

Last Friday night was pretty productive, but in an interesting way.

We really needed to go into the bigger town nearby and get some groceries, hit the Target clearance on kid's slippers, etc. So, we did, and we got done quickly and out of there with everything we needed! We decided to stop at Culver's on the way home for a treat of a frozen custard Concrete Mixer. I LOVE berries and chocolate together, and you get two mix-ins, which is delightful, so I ordered brownie pieces and raspberries in chocolate custard--mmm mmm! As we were part of the way down the road, I realized that they forgot the raspberries, and I'm not a big fan of the raspberries alone. C'est la vie. It was disappointing, but I still had a lot awaiting me when we returned home, so we couldn't turn around and rectifiy the situation. I should have seen it as a sign. The evening was about to turn!

We got home, and I got Nehemiah settled into bed. I reassemble our new double-stroller. (My aunt's friend found us a Graco DuoGlide stroller for $15 at a thrift store in Colorado, and structurally it was in great shape...it wasn't very clean though. Rhonda (who found it) said that you could just unscrew the screws holding on the upholstery and wash it all. This is not generally something I am ambitious enough to do. I may have the inclination, but it always sort of fizzles out because I get worried that I'll strip the screws and ruin the stroller or some such thing. Well, it took me quite awhile, but I was successful, and the stroller looks great!

Ben told me that he needed a haircut that night, and there was something else big that I accomplished, though I can't remember exactly what. I went about preparing the area for his haircut, and I smashed a kitchen glass. I was just moving too quickly, and had hit the end of my real productivity. Then I banged my hip on the china cabinet, which produced a lovely bruise with all sort of fun colors. I warned Ben that this probably was not the best night to attempt a haircut, but he insisted.

I have found that if I start out with the clippers on the #1 blade cover (the shortest one), I am (for some reason) more conservative, and that serves us well, because Ben likes his hair on the longer side. So I started at the bottom, as always, with the good ole' #1 . I thought I was ready to move on to blade cover #2, so I removed #1. Then I noticed that it wasn't quite even and went to even up the sides. Yeah, if you have cut hair before--you just started groaning. At this point there is no cover on the blade, and I shaved Ben's head to the skin up the side I was evening.

I gasped.

I covered my mouth.

Ben groaned.

So, I had to use shorter blades on the rest of his hair, resulting in as short a haircut as Ben has had since he left the Ranger Battalion! He is so gracious, and says he can just wear a hat, and swears that the money it saves is worth the occassional slip-ups, but you know it is bad when there is no hair underneath the back of his hat. Yikes! I then proceeded to almost wipe out with my pregnant self, by slipping in the quickly amassing pile of hair beneath me!

Ben then commented that if I needed surgery or the baby came early because I was cutting his hair and wiped out, that he was pretty sure our saving money by my giving haircuts would be down the drain. I think he's right. Maybe he can get a real haircut next time?

Thanks Mom!

My mom was in this position 27 years go, and here I am! Thanks mom!

I'm all about songs with good messages, even if I'm not a rap-fanatic! Love it! It's good to show positive moves in the industry.

Thank you!

I have gotten several comments, e-mails, and calls to check how our nights have been going since out last post, and I wanted to thank you! The Lord has been gracious! The first night wasn't as bad as I expected. It took about 50 minutes initially, and Nehemiah was up 4 more time that night, the next night was about 15 minutes and up once, and last night he cried for about 2 and a half minutes and then slept all the way through! It was awesome!

In other exciting news...my sister-in-law should be at the hospital in WY. She was scheduled to be induced early this morning, and I am waiting excitedly for a phone call with an update! :) I may have my very first nephew today!

Also, as an aside, my parents have some sad business to attend to today (it is good that their newest grandchild will distract them). Their dog is getting really old. This is the same "puppy" that followed me home from the playground when I was in 6th grade, and never left. Anyway, Al is at the point in his life where it will be the kindest thing to have him put to rest before the winter comes. Today is the big day, and it will be difficult. Please pray for my parents as they will weather this storm after each has had a full day of work. Then they'll leave for WY tomorrow morning.

You may have noticed a change in my blog format! I am excited about it, and may change it a few more times now that I found these fun layouts! My friend Sarah re-did hers and I swiped the link...feel free to do the same! Here it is: The Cutest Blog on the Block. :)

Have a blessing filled day--we will!

Can you be whelmed?

That sounds so funny to me. :) I say it, because yesterday Ben and I stopped by the store that caters to people with allergies when we were in the city yesterday. I wanted to see what they had, you know, just as a resource, should we need it.

They were very helpful. Too helpful in fact. I shouldn't have gone in there. My personality is to research and find resources so that I am ready for anything. (My friends will tell you...take one look at our diaper bag, and you know we are ready for anything!) Well, it was too much, and I wasn't prepared for that.

At first Ben and Nehemiah were next door ordering a pizza. I walked around in a bit of a daze. Looking at the books and cookbooks, the products, the free literature, and the trying to be helpful clerk. Then I had the urge to cry or throw up or something.

I hadn't given myself the space or time to consider what this could mean for Nehemiah and our family.

Did you know that there is wheat in pretty much all play dough type products aside from Crayola modeling clay? Or that it is in those sweet little Elmer's finger paints? Or candy sprinkles? Salad dressings? Gravy? Soup base? Along with just about everything else you already thought of...oh, pudding too. Uugh!

Yeah. I was shaking when I came out. My precious son. God's gift to us; which is what I need to remember--he is God's, and God is his. The Lord has always been faithful to equip those he has called. I just don't feel like being called to this!

I won't be heading back to the store again until I know for sure what is going on.

Keep praying...thanks!

I love this little board book Bible--perfect for beginning devotions. :)

ERrrr...

We took our first trip to the ER with Nehemiah last night. It was bizarre--the last time I was there was when I checked in to go up to the birthing center.

Before you get too worried, all is well.

He fell from standing earlier in the day and whacked the back of his head pretty hard. We weren't too concerned until later that evening when we were out with a group of friends for pizza. We were just about to order, and Nehemiah started throwing up. Then we remembered the head shot.

We called our insurance's ask a nurse line, and they suggested we take him in--just to rule anything major out, because it is difficult to tell sometimes with a pre-walker/talker. :) So we went.

Diagnosis: head injury (concussion was mentioned by a nurse). Prognosis: watch him over the next few days, but he looks really good, so most likely everything is fine. They didn't want to give him a CT-Scan unless they had doubts, because pumping radiation into developing brains is not a fabulous idea when it isn't necessary.

Fine by me.

We were asked a few questions by the doctor about Nehemiah's vaccination history. More accurately, the lack thereof. The doctor was curious, he said. Curious, but not pushy, which I appreciated.

We ran to Walmart since we were in the city anyway. That way we could avoid the planned trip for today, in case Nehemiah was still feeling rotten. All of this resulted in a bunch of driving in the late afternoon and evening hours. I'm not sure if that is what did it, or if it was the feeling yucky, but he was up alot last night. I was up with him at 12, 2, (maybe 3--I'm a little hazy this morning), 4, and 6, and Ben got him up at 7:30 this morning. Whew! Ben let me sleep until 9 or so and did the morning routine, which I was grateful for, and now Nehemiah is down for his morning nap. Hooray!

Delights

Two days ago, I looked out my window to this and nearly cried:

Today it may reach 60 degrees, most of the snow is gone from the land, and I feel like doing a Spring Dance--hurrah!

I got a surprise after-Easter package from my Grandma in the mail. There was a little something for me, and a little something for Nehemiah.

It is great to have a grandma! Especially when she is so sweet! In a way my blog reminds me of her. It is my little daily journal of odds and ends.

Ever since I can remember, the little squares on my grandma's calendar have been her journal. It is so cool. A little bit of the weather and whatever was accomplished in the day fills each square--not a lot of pressure, but when you write really small, it is amazing what you can fit! :) Anyway, here's to Grandmas! (And yes, that is my sewing maching lurking in the background...I can't bear to put it away just yet--is it laziness? Or as I prefer to think of it, am I waiting for a bit more inspiration to strike?!) ;)

Brainiac

I can literally see Nehemiah's brain growing before my eyes. Maybe it is that latent teacher in me. Or, maybe it is just the proud Mama; though I don't know many other mamas that forget to record the 3rd tooth, but rush to the calendar to scribble down that her baby crossed his midline for the first time! (That was several months ago, by the way)

In the past few days, Nehemiah has really learned to look for things you hide. I have been sneaking things under blankies when he is looking and when he isn't, and he has gotten really good at finding them! Today he even found a sunshine in this little Velcro envelope it hides in, and all of the toys in his mailbox. He opened them up and pulled them out proudly. I was impressed!
The other exciting occurrence of the day? We were reading some books before naptime this afternoon, and HE TURNED THE PAGES! Yeehaw--my little reader! I am so proud! *Beams*

Happy Holidays to meeee!

My mom sent me a package today! Yeehaw! She called it our St. Patrick's Day/Easter package. What a thoughtful mom! Anyway, there was something for everyone.

Nehemiah got an adorable pair of overalls from Old Navy and some cutie pjs that say "Mom's Lucky Charm" on them for now, and a pair of jeans, windpants, and a sweatshirt for later this summer/fall. He is always cute, but it is nice to know that we'll be able to carry on the tradition! ;)

Ben got a hilarious Price is Right DVD Game and a green t-shirt.

...And I got, a really comfy hooded sweater, a long-sleeved green t-shirt, and the Love and Logic Magic for Early Childhood book. I have been eying this for quite some time, and I am SO excited to have it. I'd like to give the Love and Logic method and shot, and it makes sense to me to start ASAP. We're 2 chapters in, and so far both Ben and I are enjoying the philosophy and practical examples. I'll have to let you more as we learn and practice more. Uh-oh! Mr. man is waking up--I guess his routine was a bit thrown off today (Ben stayed home sick, and then we had an impromptu trip to both the town nearby (bank and post office) and to the bigger city. There were some sick day entertainment/belated birthday gift needs to be met there. Part of the reason Nehemiah is up is probably due to the muted sound of a Wii Mission-in-progress.

Gotta run!

In Memory

Who forgets drinking Coke and eating Oreos on the beach and then splashing in the surf while their parents are still sleeping away the morning? Not this great granddaughter. That is probably my favorite memory with my great-grandma, and it shows who she was. She loved her family dearly, she loved mornings, and she loved Coke and Oreos!

Almost every Sunday in my childhood was spent with GG. We’d bring Dunkin Donuts, or she would have some delightful thing cooked up and ready to go. I’ve never had Corn Chowder, Egg Custard, or Vegetable Beef Soup that tasted better than at Grandma’s. We’d look through the TV Guide and help her finish up any missing entries in the crossword puzzle and we’d play HiQ until everyone knew we were geniuses. We’d mix up potions in the back and side yards, and climb trees across the street.

On special occasions, we would all go out to eat. We’d either gobble down massive burgers at Red Top, snag some ice cream at Fat Man’s (GG was one of the few that still knew why it was called that), or head for something SPICY. GG was hot, hot, HOT! We’d have Hot Sauce or Hot Mustard wherever we went. Unless it was to the Cracker Barrel or Golden Corral for some down-home cookin’. When I was little, I remember my family’s pride as we wrote on the calendar… “The day we spiced out GG!” We went to Seis Salsa’s 6 that night and finally found one GG couldn’t handle—a victorious occasion!

Christmas. She was our Christmas Elf. Her light display every year was a winter wonderland that made me gawk in awe as a kid. Not to mention the cars that drove by just to check it out. The spread on Christmas was always amazing; homemade hot mustard, cream cheese rolls, summer sausage, ham, her famous beans, fudge of all sorts, peanut brittle, the works! And then came the tree. It overflowed with gifts lovingly purchased, or the best treasures, the gifts she made. You were the luckiest one that year if you got a handmade gift. They are works of love and art.

I’ll never have another “smooch” again. It’s bittersweet for me. There is nothing like a GG smooch. It is much more than just a kiss. She had that pucker power, and she’d plant one on you that you just knew was different somehow. I got my smooches in December, and so did my son, Nehemiah. I’ll always miss them, and he will grow up to know about them.

GG always had great stories to tell. Either the family history sort, or the world traveler sort. We learned we were related to Jesse James, Elvis Presley, and a guy who used to squirrel hunt with Abraham Lincoln. GG used to dance the night away in Oklahoma as the caller yelled, Di-Si-Do! I was privileged to wear her green skirt when I was about 8 years old to the father-daughter square dance for girl scouts. She wore the same skirt when she was in her twenties—what a tiny, pretty woman she was. I was so proud! We heard of her adventures in Australia, New Zealand, who could forget Fiji (and her lover), Alaska and the “I did a trod” dogs, Greece, and the Holy Land. I world traveled through her stories.

I know that my grandma was full of love, strength, independence, precision, efficiency, perseverance, fun, and good cooking! Quite the combination, but she was quite the lady!

I wish I could be there to say my final good-byes, but that would be more for me than for her. She held my hand in December, just before bouncing my nearly 20 pound boy on her tummy, and told us that she had to make it to Christmas so she could see us; all 5 generations of us. And I knew I had to make it to Colorado so we could see her. My only regret is that it was the last time.
